G’day, my name’s Derek. And this is my band - Social Science.
Musically, it’s about combining sounds and styles and the attitudes behind them. With a background of many years playing symphonic, rock, jazz and world music it is very natural for me to bring together sounds from many genres to produce a large and cinematic aesthetic, which is at times epic and at others highly intimate.
Socially, my primary focus is what I am calling ‘support for the inside self’. I want to celebrate the individual human experience and be a loud voice for saying "you are fine just the way you are, right now" as an antidote for the many messages in the world today which overtly or covertly tellyou the opposite.
I am continually seeking to resolve the question – ‘how can we be better together than we are apart?’
